CVCA WRESTLERS 3RD IN STATE...

The CVCA Wrestling team finished in 3rd place in Division III at the OHSAA State Wrestling Tournament held at the Ohio State University's Jerome Schottenstein Center on March 5-7th, 2009.  The state tournament capped off an outstanding season for the team.  Throughout the year the team finished as the highest scoring team from Summit County at the prestigious Walsh Ironman Tournament in early December,  3rd at the North Canton Tournament, 3rd at the Medina Invitational Tournament, 5th at the Alliance Top Gun Tournament, Loudonville Gribble Tournament Champions, Undefeated PAC-7 League Champions, OHSAA Sectional Champions, and OHSAA District Champions!  It is amazing how much God has blessed this year's group of athletes.  Without the Lord guiding us in everything that we do on and off of the mat, none of the year's accomplishments would have been possible.  It is truly to our Savior that we give the glory for any recognition or honors that we have received.

This year many CVCA Wrestling records fell along with recognizing 7 State Place Winners and crowning CVCA's 12th State Champion.  7 State Placers is the most of any school in any division behind St. Paris Graham.  CVCA advanced 8 wrestlers to state which tied a school record from 2001, and the 7 state placers is the most ever in CVCA Wrestling history.

2009 OHSAA DIVISION III

135 LBS. STATE CHAMPION

TYLER POWERS

Senior Tyler Powers became the school's 12th State Wrestling Champion at the 135 lbs. weight class.  Tyer finished in 8th place at last year's State Tournament.  This year Tyler lost two matches at the toughest tournament in the country, the Walsh Ironman, in the first event of the year; and he did not lose another match the rest of the season.  Tyler was Champion at the North Canton, Loudonville Gribble, PAC-7, Sectional, District, and State Tournaments this season.  Tyler entered the State tournament ranked 3rd in the Brakeman Report, but was determined to win a state title.  Tyler began the tournament by pinning Clint Boyd of Caldwell in 3:45 in the first round.  In the quarter-finals Tyler defeated Delta's Reid Rayfield 5-0.  Tyler advanced to the finals with a semi-final win over St. Clairsville's Dominic Prezzia 3-2.  In the championship match Tyler dominated Ben Kuzma of Bascom Hopewell-Loudon winning by a score of 7-1.  Tyler finished with an overall record of 37-2 for the season.

Sophomore State Place winner Alex Utley returned to the 160 lbs. weight class where he placed third last season as a freshman.  This year his sights were set higher.  Alex started the State Tournament by pinning Jarrod Zang from Columbus Bishop Hartley, then tech-falled Liberty Center's Jake Elling in the quarterfinals.  Belpre's Ashton Packard fell to Alex in the semi-finals 7-3.  Alex became only the third wrestler in CVCA history to make it to the State Finals prior to his Junior year.  In the finals Alex fell to the number five ranked wrestler in the country in three-time state champion Zach Toal from Troy Christian.  Alex has accumulated 86 wins in just his first two seasons, which is the second most in CVCA histroy behind Harry Lester's 88 wins (1998-1999).

Greg Hojnacki placed 7th at last year's State Tournament at 189 lbs.  He returned to start the season at 189 lbs., but at the end of January decided that he was more comfortable wrestling at 215 lbs.  That was a great decision.  Greg went on a tear the last month of the season racking up a PAC-7, Sectional, and District Championship.  He entered the State Tournament on a great winning streak and continued it in the first two rounds by defeating Andrew Wright of Galion Northmor and Sean Slee of Liberty Center.  Greg lost a very close match in the semi-finals, but bounced back to beat Manchester's Kyle Kelly and Milan Edison's Craig Ritz to finish in 3rd Place.

CVCA newcomer Zak Vargo came to CVCA for his junior year and did an outstanding job at the 125 lbs. weight class.  Zak came into the State Tournament also on a good run after winning the Loudonville, PAC-7, Sectional, and District Championships over the course of the past four weeks.  Zak advanced to the semi-finals of the State Tournament by defeating Josh Coulter of Cardington Lincoln and Kyle Burns of Milan Edison.  Zak lost a close 2-1 decision in the semis,

but battled back to defeat Marion Pleasant's three-time state place winner Riki Reynolds and PAC-7 rival Eli Donahue of Tuslaw to finish in 3rd place.

Seth Powers at the 112 lbs. weight class finished last season as a State Alternate, but came into this year

determined to take that extra step and wrestle in the State Tournament.  He did exactly that and came into the State Tournament after having a tremendous performance at Districts.  Seth finished 4th in the state having to defeat

Tim Arthur of Jamestown Greenview in the first round, and then after dropping to consolations Seth beat every other

qualifier from the Maple Heights District on his way to the 3rd place match.

Junior Brandon Sommers had a gutsy State Tournament at 130 lbs..  After fighting off bronchitis all week, Brandon defeated his first two opponents advancing to the semi-finals.  Brandon beat Joey Bodenbender from Defiance Tinora

in the first round, and then he beat Cinncinati Madeira's Johnny Carpenter in the quarterfinals, avenging a

loss from last year's State quarterfinals.  Brandon lost a close match in the semi-finals. Then, unfortunately,

a knee injury caused Brandon to default down to 6th place.

Freshman Michael Ratay had an excellent State Tournament and finished in 7th Place at 103 lbs.  Michael had some very exciting matches and defeated  Luke Kern of Liberty Center, Cody Steiner of Waynesville, and Anthony Elchert of Arcadia on his way to 7th Place.  Michael is CVCA only the fifth wrestler in CVCA history to place at States as a freshman.  Fellow Freshman Matt Meadows made it down to the State tournament and did a great job wrestling at the 152 lbs. weight class.

CONGRATULATIONS CVCA WRESTLERS AND COACHES!!!

The Royals also had three 3rd place finishers in Freshmen Michael Ratay (103 lbs.), Sophomore Seth Powers (112 lbs.), and Junior Brandon Sommers (130 lbs.).  Freshman Matt Meadows (152 lbs.) also qualified for the State Tournament by finishing in 4th place.  David Gray, Daniel Griffith, and Matthew Hickin also won matches and contributed to the team title,

but fell short of qualifying for the State tournament.

 2009 CVCA Wrestling

Eight to State!!!

The wrestlers will head to Columbus on Wednesday to get ready for the weekend's competition.  The 8 CVCA State Qualifiers ties the school record for most State Qualifiers in one year.  The wrestlers and coaches look forward to this weekend and are excited to see how God is going to work during this last tournament of the season.  Win or Lose the CVCA Wrestling family is extremely proud of these guys and their accomplishments.  We are proud to send the glory to God for blessing us with the opportunity and ability to honor Him in all that we do!!!

The CVCA Wrestlers carried their already successful year into the post season as the Royals won their third tournament in the last three weeks by winning the OHSAA Division III Rootstown Sectional.  The team scored an impressive

231.0 points and advanced 11 wrestlers to next week's District Tournament.  Leading the way for the Royals

were 6 Sectional Champions.  The team's 6 Sectional Champions is a CVCA school record

and the 11 District Qualifiers ties the record for most ever by a CVCA team.

Senior Tyler Powers took home his second straight sectional title with a win over Girard's Daniel Gainey

in the finals of the 135 lbs. weight class.  Junior Zak Vargo won his first Sectional championship for CVCA

by defeating Woodridge's Brad Norval in the finals at 125 lbs.  130 lbs. Junior Brandon Sommers also won his

second straight sectional championship pinning Girard's Tony Cardiero in the finals.

Freshman Matt Meadows avenged an earlier season loss to Woodridge State Qualifier Lambert McElrath in the finals of the 152 lbs. weight class.  Matt won the sectional championship match by technical fall 17-2.  Sophomore Alex Utley won the sectional at 160 lbs., as did Senior Greg Hojnacki at 215 lbs. and Matt Hickin at 140 lbs.  Also advancing to Districts were freshmen

PAC-7 TOURNAMENT...

The CVCA Wrestlers traveled to Wooster Triway to compete in the Principal's Athletic Conferance Tournament on Saturday February 14th.  The other PAC-7 schools are Fairless, Manchester, Canton Timken, Wooster Triway, Tusky Valley, Tuslaw, and Indian Valley, who is new to the league this year.  The Royals after going undefeated (7-0) in PAC-7 dual meet competition wanted to dominate the end of season league tournament as well.

The team did just that winning the team title and league championship for the fourth time in the last five years.  Seth Powers won his second PAC-7 title by winning the tournament at 112 lbs.  Junior Zak Vargo avenged two defeats earlier this season to Tuslaw's Eli Donahue by defeating him 1-0 in the finals at 125 lbs.  Brandon Sommers at 130 lbs. won the PAC-7 Championship for the third straight year.  Tyler Powers dominated the 135 lbs. weight class taking first place.  Senior Matthew Hickin ended his PAC-7 career by winning the championship at 140 lbs.

Perhaps one of the most exciting performances of the tournament was freshman Matt Meadows who one the title at 152 lbs.  Matt defeated senior state qualifier Bo Gilmore of Indian Valley in the first round.  Then he beat Manchester's Jake Dies in the semi-finals.  In the finals Matt won a close match to Tuslaw's Todd Remaneric.  To have a freshman beat three state ranked wrestlers at one of the toughest weight classes in the tournament was very exciting for the CVCA supporters to see.  Alex Utley continued to have great success, winning the tournament at 160 lbs.  Finally, Greg Hojnacki won the tournament in impressive fashion at 215 lbs. by pinning Kyle Kelly of Manchester in the finals.

152 lbs. Tournament Champion:  Matt Meadows

The team also had two third place finishers in freshmen David Gray at 145 lbs. and Daniel Griffith at 171 lbs. Overall the Royals went undefeated in the final round going 10 for 10 for the second week in a row.  The team scored an astounding 204 points on their way to the league championship.  Congratulations Royals and Good Luck in the post season!

WRESTLER HARRY LESTER BACK ON THE MATS...

By David Lee Morgan Jr.
Beacon Journal sports writer

Much like Brett Favre with football, Harry Lester can't let go.  Lester, the former CVCA and Northern Michigan University All-American, has won a Pan-American gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling and was a world bronze medalist the past two years.  And he retired after a loss in the Olympic Trials in 2008.

''Anytime you can represent your country it's an honor,'' Lester said. ''Whether it's sports, in war or politics, anyone who is given that opportunity knows it's an honor. I take great pride being on that world team and bringing back a medal for our country. Every day, I'm thankful I had that honor.''

Lester, 25, was a favorite to win the gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics but was upset by eventual champion Jake Deitchler in the 145.5-pound-weight class. Lester finished third in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

Lester usually wrestled at a higher weight class and had to drop a significant

amount of weight to get to 145.5 for the 2008 Olympic Trials.

That might have taken a toll on Lester.  ''Harry doesn't make any excuses and he'll probably never admit it but having to drop all of that weight,'' said CVCA wrestling coach Don Lorence. ''And I'm sure [losing] that last 20 pounds was tough on him.''

After Lester lost to Deitchler, Lester decided to hang up the wrestling shoes.

It was an emotional loss for Lester and it was supposed to be the end of an illustrious career.

n

But now, things have changed and Lester has that desire to compete once again.

''I've been thinking about it the last year and a half to two years,'' Lester said about returning to the sport. ''I thought I'd pretty much be done after this cycle and that I would move on with my live, move on with my career and start a family.''

So what did Lester, who is training in Northern Michigan, do after ''retiring?''

He spent six months enjoying life and traveling around the country and hanging out with friends and family.

But this past October, Lester started to get that feeling, like he needed to get back on the mat.

His goal is to make the U.S. team for the 2012 Olympics.

''I started thinking to myself, 'am I ready to put in the time and the training and sacrifice my free

time that I had to do this,' '' Lester said. ''That's what it came down to. It's a big commitment

and I get it in my head that I'm going to give 100 percent to this.''

Lester's plan is to take his comeback one day at a time because he said he doesn't know

what to expect. He'll train and compete in tournaments to get himself back to form.

''My body feels all right,'' he said. ''I have the wear and tear that you have

with every elite athlete. I just have to suck it up and do what I have to do.''

Lester will wrestle at the 163 weight class.

''Moving up [from 145] will be a big plus for him,'' Lorence said.

This summer, Lester said he plans to do something different, as far as his training is concerned.

He's returning to the area and will train and help at camps with Lorence, who runs Ohio Elite Wrestling Camps, formerly Lorence Wrestling Camps, in Aurora.

''He's just the complete package, on and off the mat,'' Lorence said about Lester and his involvement with the camps. ''When he works with the kids at camp, he's very sincere. He truly will help anyone, and it doesn't matter what their skill level is.''

Lester is looking forward to his homecoming this summer.

''I'll be in a comfort zone around my family and friends that I have there,'' he said. ''That's something different that I think will give me a spark in training that I haven't had the last few years. I'll get that, being back home with the guys I grew up and wrestled with. I'll push the campers and inspire them and I'm sure they'll do the same for me.''

The varsity wrestlers were in action down at Indian Valley on Wednesday night February 11th.  The Royals took on PAC-7 foes Indian Valley and Canton Timken in a tri-meet.  This make-up match was originally scheduled for January 14th, but was postponed due to weather.    The Royals made the long trip to Indian Valley worth while by winning both dual meets.  The wrestlers defeated Canton Timken 61-18 and then Indian Valley by a score of 43-31.

The Royals did not lose a single match against Canton Timken, giving up 18 points from only forfeits.  The Royals did however have a challenge from Indian Valley who gave the Royals their second closest dual of the year.  Giving up forfeits at 103 and 125, out starters Mike Ratay and Zak Vargo, the Royals knew that they were in for a battle.

160 lbs. Champion Alex Utley

Junior Zak Vargo placed an impressive 3rd at the 125 lbs. weight class.  Zak advanced to the semifinals before falling 6-1 to the nation's #3 ranked wrestler at 125 lbs. in Zach Neibert from St. Paris Graham.  Zak bounced back to win two close consolation matches to finish in third.

Several CVCA Wrestlers competed in the 29th Chippewa Invitational Tournament in Doylestown, OH on

Friday January 10th.  Wrestling was scheduled to continue on Saturday, but due to extreme weather conditions

THE GREATEST SHOW IN WRESTLING...

The Medina Invitational Tournament is called "The Greatest Show in Wrestling," and is one of the biggest and toughest tournaments in all of Ohio.  CVCA competed at this tournament Monday and Tuesday December 29th and 30th, 2008 at Medina High School.  The team has had a very strong 2008, and the last event of the calender year did not disappoint.  The Royals finished as Champions in Division III and in third place overall only behind Division I powerhouses Massillon Perry and Lakewood St. Edward.  The 151.5 points scored and 7 place winners is one of CVCA's best finishes ever.

The team was led by Junior State Place Winner Brandon Sommers, who joined the ranks of an elite few CVCA wrestlers who have been crowned champion of the M.I.T.  Harry Lester, Andy Vogel, Jarrad Turner, and Jared Kusar are the others.  Harry and Brandon are the only two who have accomplished this feat before their Senior Season.

Brandon won the 130 lbs. weight class finishing 5-0 overall including an exciting 4 overtime thriller in the semifinals.  Sam Hazewinkel (4X NCAA All-American at Oklahoma and Ranked #2 in country in Greco at 55kg) commented on Brandon after the match saying: "The kid's a stud!"

The other CVCA Wrestlers did an outstanding job as well.  Senior Tyler Powers advanced to the semi-finals at 135 lbs. before being injured by an illegal slam.  This unfortunate situation advanced Tyler to the finals where he was unable to compete due to injury earning him 2nd place for the tournament.  Tyler had a slight seperation and partial tear in his shoulder, but should be back in action in a few weeks.

After a tough overtime loss in the semi-finals, Sophomore Alex Utley wrestled back to finish in 3rd place for the tournament at 171 lbs. Senior Greg Hojnacki won 4 matches on his way to a fourth place finish at 189 lbs.

Seth Powers at 112 lbs. and Zak Vargo at 125 lbs. both finished as a strong 5th place, and Senior Matt Hickin wrestled great in the 140 lbs. weight class to finish in 8th place for the tournament.

Giving the glory to God for all of the team's accomplishments the CVCA Wrestlers continued to show improvement on what looks to be a promising 2009 for the CVCA Royals.

CVCA's JARED KUSAR FREESTYLE ALL-AMERICAN...

Recent CVCA Graduate Jared Kusar traveled to Fargo, North Dakota to participate as a member of the Ohio Freestyle National Team in the Asics/Vaughn Junior Freestyle Nationals held July 24-26th.  Jared finished in 7th Place earning All-American Honors at 152 pounds. Jared is one of only 11 wrestlers from Ohio in Junior Freestyle to finish in the top eight at this prestigious national tournament.  There were 96 total wrestlers from 33 different states in Jared's weight class.

Wrestling at the Fargo Dome

Jared finished with an overall record of 7-2.  After starting off the tournament with five straight wins over Anthony Frettwell (Georgia), Jordan Kays (Pennsylvania), Nestor Taffeur (New Jersey), Kyle Meyer (Missouri), and Jake Bohn (Michigan);  Jared then lost a tough match to the eventual champion in Mario Mason (New Jersey).  Jared won two more bouts over Steve Santos (New Jersey) and then Cody Compton (Missouri) in the 7th Place Match.

Complete Results from Junior Freestyle Nationals can be viewed at:

Jared is truly a remarkable story.  This was only Jared's second freestyle tournament ever!  His first was when he qualified for Fargo by winning the Central Junior Regionals in May.  It is almost unheard of for a wrestler to have this much success at a national level with as little experience as Jared has.  Jared has been training rigorously with former Junior Freestyle National Champion Sonny Marchete to prepare for this event.

Jared will go down as one of the greatest wrestlers in CVCA history.  He was a two time state placer while at CVCA (three time placer overall) finishing 3rd in 2006, 7th in 2007, and 3rd in 2008.  He compiled an outstanding 88-9 record in his two years at CVCA.  Jared was a Medina Invitational Champion, Two Time North Canton Holiday Invitational Champion, Top Gun Tournament Champion, Two Time Sectional and District Champion, and Two Time Ironman Placer.  He finished as an All-American taking 7th at NHSCA Senior Nationals in March and now adds Freestyle All-American to his already impressive resume.  Jared will continue his wrestling career for Tom Ryan and the NCAA National Runner-Up Ohio State Buckeyes in the fall.  Congratulations Jared and Good Luck at Ohio State!

FORMER CVCA GREAT HARRY LESTER RETIRES...

2001 CVCA Graduate and 4X State Champion Harry Lester retired from wrestling after his final match at the U.S. Olympic Trials last weekend.  Unfortunately, Harry was upset in the semi-finals by Jake Deitchler of Ramsey, Minnesota.   After defeating Oscar Wood for third place a disappointed Lester left his shoes in the center of the mat signifying his retirement.  Here is the link to Harry's emotional interview with FloWrestling after his final match:  http://wrestling.flocasts.org/videos/coverage/view_video/234021-us-olympic-trials-2008/66129-harry-lester

Here is what Harry had to say to the wrestling fans of Ohio (from ohiowrestling.net):

"First and foremost I want to thank God for all that he has done for me. I am truly blessed to be from the great state of Ohio. I wouldn't want to be from anywhere else. Since I have started wrestling, I have been blessed to be around people that have been very generous, caring, and loving, and to me that is a characteristic of people from Ohio. My goal throughout my career has been to be the best that I could be while enjoying and loving the sport. At the same time, I wanted to make wrestling entertaining and joyous for others, I hope I have made it that way for Ohio fans. I have received many emails and texts asking me to reconsider my retirement from wrestling and I am thankful that so many people care enough to write me, but this is my response to the emails and texts. I love wrestling and I love the wrestling community, but competing isn't the same for me anymore. The fire isn't burning as much as it should be. I have tried to find a way to overcome my feelings, but it just isn't there anymore to compete. I plan to stay involved with wrestling by coaching and passing on my knowledge in any way possible. I think it would be selfish of me not to. I will contribute to the growth of Ohio wrestling in any way I can. Once again, thank you for all the support and prayers."

- Harry Lester

Harry has accomplished the following throughout his wrestling career:

2x World Bronze Medalist
Pan Am Games Gold Medalist
3x U.S. World Team Member
U.S. National Champ
University National Champ - Freestyle
4x University National Champ – Greco Roman
Jr. National Greco Roman Champ
FILA Cadet Freestyle World Champ
4x Ohio High School State Champ

Harry retires as one of the greatest wrestlers ever from the state of Ohio.  It is an understatement to say that wrestling at CVCA would not be what it is today without the great Harry Lester.  He has had a positive impact on the lives of everyone involved with CVCA Wrestling.  The CVCA Wrestling Family wishes Harry the best in all of his future endeavors and looks forward to what God holds in the future for him.  Thank you Harry for all that you have done for CVCA and the sport of wrestling.

CVCA Senior and 3X State Place Winner Jared Kusar brought home the championship at 160 lbs. from USA Wrestling's 2008 Central Junior Regional Freestyle Championships held on May 25th at the Greater Columbus Convention Center's Battelle Hall in Columbus, Ohio.

Jared defeated many tough competitors (including Ohio State Champion Aaron Sulzer from Holy Name) on his way to the title despite this being his first freestyle tournament ever!  Jared has been training with former Junior National Freestyle Champion Sonny Marchete to prepare for this summer's freestyle events.  Winning this tournament automatically qualifies Jared to compete for Team Ohio at Junior Freestyle Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota in July.  Jared is hoping for a great summer of wrestling before he continues his wrestling career at The Ohio State University in the fall.

Results from the Central Junior Regional can be found at:
